Algonope The Little Mermaid- $150.00
Algonope The Little Mermaid (Algonope translates to beautiful face.)
Description of the body and tail
She measures 16-1/2 inches from the tip of her right hand (or fin) to the tip of her right foot. Her beautiful iridescent tail measures approximately 14 inches, her body at the waist (the thickest part) is approximately 1 inch thick. Her body is made of polyester fiberfill stuffed Wine coloured Moiré Taffeta. Moiré gives the body a sort of quiet shading that varies from very dark to lighter wine colour to almost black, depending on the lighting. Her tail is in two parts made from Wired nylon ribbon so it can be positioned at will. I dyed the ribbon with different tints of mauve, wine and purple to go with the colour of the body. I then sprinkled some iridescent dust for sparkle. Just above the elbows and at the calves, she has fins, made from layers of the same dyed nylon as the tail with some white nylon added.
Sculpting the head
Her head is an original sculpted from Cernit (polymer clay). Her eyes are hand made from prebaked white Cernit eyeballs inserted in the head during the sculpting procedure. I paint on the cheeks, eyebrows and some lip colour using special powder coulours before baking the head. Once baked, I paint in the irises, pupils, eyeshadow, add more lip colour, cheek colour or whatever is needed to define the features and
satisfy the look I want for that particular piece. Note: For additional information on how I sculpt, please go to In the Works and click on Anatomy the making of...
Embellishing
Now comes the fun part. Yesss embellishing, my very favorite. Algonope loves sparcklies, so the outer part of her body is edged with a string of white rhinestones, set in black plastic mini tubes, a very nice effect, reflecting the light especially when she floats freely. The inner part of her body is edged with silver metallic ribbon. On her head
she wears a tight cap of green sea weed type leaves with miniature sea shells here and there. On her forehead, attached to the green cap she has a gold filigreed metal finding, with a wine coloured center cut glass stone, with 2 iridescent smaller stones on each side. A string of white rhinestones goes from under her right arm, across here chest, down to the waist and around her back to end at her left hip. She has a small
silver metal chain, with elongated pearls here and there wrapped around her neck a few times then hanging loosely from the left side of her neck down to her right waist and back up to the neck. Another larger silver metal chain hangs from the right side of her neck down her back and front, around her waist, meeting to the right waist where it ends in a loose loop with Christals attached. It looks like a silver chain with Chrystal tassel . This hangs down letting the light play with the colours of the Crystals. Her tail, in two parts, grows out of the tip of her toes, held there by a metal jewelry finding, with a larger melon shaped iridescent glass bead, and a few iridescent cut glass stones on
either side.
Finishing touches
At the back of the neck and the back of the left toe she has a metal loop that can be used to hang her up on a wall at an angle; as if she were swimming or floating upwards. Or you may thread a piece of invisible thread through one loop, then through the other leaving them as long as you prefer then knotting them together to form a sort of triangle with one point above her body. This way you may hang her up to float freely in the air. If there is some air movement, or sunlight coming in through a window little multicoloured specks of light from her jewelry and the hanging Crystals will seem to radiate from her.
Either way is nice, but I do like to see her free floating in the air. Note: I found that when I knotted the invisible thread above her head and then left about 3 inches and tied in another knot, she seemed much more sensitive to the air moving her a bit.
With her charming smile, peaceful little round face and graceful body; Algonope; to me, represents a calm, happy little mermaid; quite content to swim around in her very own peaceful dream world under the sea... |
